Microsoft has responded to widespread criticism of its new Recall feature in Windows 11, which captures thousands of screenshots per hour to create a searchable history of user activity. Initially hailed as a “photographic memory” for PCs, Recall has faced backlash from security experts and privacy advocates. In response, Microsoft has announced that Recall will be disabled by default and will require user opt-in during setup. Enhanced security measures will include authentication via Windows Hello and encryption of all saved data. Despite the controversy, Microsoft aims to launch Recall on June 18, 2024, with its new Copilot+ PCs, emphasizing user control and privacy.
